ASABA, Delta State – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed conditional support for the creation of Anioma State, a proposal championed by Senator Prince Ned Nwoko .
Addressing the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, Delta State, Akpabio said: “If that is the only demand from South South…, then I should be proud to support it. Assuming it passes through in various Houses of Assemblies, it simply means that we will have one additional state. Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
Akpabio’s remarks have sparked debate, with supporters of the proposal expressing optimism about the prospects of Anioma State becoming a reality. However, the Senate President’s conditional language suggests that the road to statehood remains uncertain.
The proposal has raised questions about the potential implications for Delta State, particularly with regards to the shift in state boundaries and the designation of a new capital.
The big question is, if the Anioma state happens, will it be zoned to the South-East? Will the people of Delta North agree to be part of the South-East region?
